How to live as a Christian, Romans 12 Sunday, Nov 30 2008

In Romans, chapters 1-11, Paul was making his case for the gospel being for both the Jews and Gentiles.  Now, in chapter 12, he’s getting very specific on how a Christian should live.

12:1  offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy, and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship

12:2  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

12:3  Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

12:5  in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to the others

12:6  We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.

         If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

12:7  If it is serving, let him serve;

        if it is teaching, let him teach;

12:8  if it is encouraging, let him encourage;

         if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously;

        if it is in leadership, let him govern diligently;

        if it is in showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

12:9  Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

12:10  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.

           Honor one another above ourselves.

12:11  Never be lacking zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

12:12  Be joyful in hope,

           patient in affliction,

          faithful in prayer.

12:13  Share with God’s people who are in need.

           Practice hospitality.

12:14  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

12:15  Rejoice with those who rejoice;

          mourn with those who mourn.

12:16  Live in harmony with one another.

          Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.

          Do not be conceited.

12:17  Do not repay evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.

12:18  as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone

12:19  Do not take revenge, but leave room for God’s wrath.

12:20  [Paul quotes from Proverbs 25:20]

           “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

           if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.”

12:21  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Just think what I would be like if I could do all of these…all at once.  By God’s grace…

I won’t list them here, but various people come to mind who embody each of these characteristics.  I think I’ll make that list and keep it to myself.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 11 Saturday, Nov 29 2008

11:22  Consider the kindness and sternness of Godsternness to those who fell [Jews], but kindness to you [Gentiles}, provided that you continue in his kindness.  Otherwise you also will be cut off.

11:25  Israel [Jews] has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

11:26  And so all Israel will be saved.

This puzzles me.  It sounds as if God has hardened the hearts of the chosen people so they would reject Jesus/God.  Then God offers salvation to the Gentiles, if they believe.  Until the numbers of the Gentiles equal the numbers of the Jews, it will remain like that.  The footnotes say Jews must also believe.  Paul, the writer, says he’s made a big deal of offering the good news to the Gentiles so the Jewish people will be envious and will want to receive this salvation through Jesus, too.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 10 Thursday, Nov 27 2008

10:4  Christ is the end of the law so there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

10:9  if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10:10  with your heart you believe and are justified; with your mouth you confess and are saved

10:13  Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

10:14  How can they call on one they have not believed in?

           How can they believe in one of whom they have not heard?

           How can they hear without someone preaching to them?

           How can they preach unless they are sent?

10:17  faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ

Paul talks about the Jews and their being chosen but not believing.  Salvation is made available to both Jews and Gentiles who believe.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 9 Wednesday, Nov 26 2008

9:16  It does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

9:30  …a righteousness by faith

Most of this chapter Paul is showing how the Israelites or Jews were God’s chosen people, but many of them did not believe.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 8 Tuesday, Nov 25 2008

8:1  there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

8:2  through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free of the law of sin and death

8:6  the mind of the sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace

8:10  if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness

8:13  if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live

8:14  because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons [daughters] of God

8:15  you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear

8:16  The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children

8:24  hope that is seen is no hope at all

8:26  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us

8:28  we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him

8:29  for those God foreknew he predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son

8:30  those he predestined he also called,

         those he called he also justified,

         those he justified he also glorified

8:31  What shall we say in response?  If God is for us, who can be against us?

8:33  it is God who justifies

8:35  Who shall separate us from the love of God?  trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, sword?

8:39  nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord

Hope/trust in Jesus/God/Spirit should replace my worry/fear.  I do not have to fix/solve everything around me.

Huge snowflakes falling Monday, Nov 24 2008

big-snowflakes

My meadow grasses by the porch railing are so beautiful and frothy.  Look closely and you can see huge snowflakes falling, especially if you look at the fence, tree, and garage.

I have video capability on my camera but haven’t used it.  I’ve missed my chance to experiment today, because now the snowflakes are much smaller and not so impressive.  Next time, I’ll try to catch the huge ones on video.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 7 Monday, Nov 24 2008

7:4  you died to the law through the body of Christ…that we might bear fruit to God.

7:6  we have been released from the law so we may serve in the new way of the Spirit

7:13  through the commandment, sin became utterly sinful

7:18  I have the desire to do what is good but I cannot carry it out.

7:21  when I want to do good, evil is right there with me

7:22  In my inner being I delight in God’s law, but I see another law at work…making me a prisoner of the law of sin.

7:24  What a wretched man [woman] I am!  Who will rescue me?  Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord.

It sounds as if we rely on ourselves, we can easily sin; however, if we rely on God’s strength, his Spirit within us (provided through Jesus), we can do what is right and “bear fruit to God.”  This would seem to require a constant vigilance, to keep alive to the Spirit.  I don’t think a Christian automatically serves God even though we are to be dead to sin.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 6 Sunday, Nov 23 2008

6:4  we too may live a new life.

6:7  we should no longer be slaves to sin

6:11  count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

6:12  do not let sin reign in your mortal body

6:13  offer yourselves to God; offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

6:14  sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law but under grace

6:17  you used to be slaves to sin.  You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

6:22  you have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

6:23  sin leads to death but God’s gift is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul is writing to believers who no longer are slaves to sin; because they have believed, they now are free to serve God and have eternal life.

Keeping laws can be a huge, burden; believers no longer are burdened but are free to serve God because Jesus took the burden of sin/death himself so we don’t have to die in sin but can live.

How to live as a Christian, Romans 5 Saturday, Nov 22 2008

5:1  …since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

5:2  through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace

5:3 suffering produces perseverance,

5:4  perseverance, character and character, hope.

5:5  God has poured his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

5:6  Christ died for the ungodly.

5:12  …sin entered into the world through one man [Adam]

5:17  …those who receive God’s provision of grace and the gift of righteousness through one man [Jesus]

5:20  …where sin increased, grace increased all the more

5:21  sin reigned in death, grace reigns through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sin existed before the law; the law shows our sinfulness even clearer.  God’s grace provides a way to live in righteousness, through faith in Jesus.
