Summer blooms Thursday, Jul 31 2008

These are the petunias I moved from my front flower beds.  They were hidden among the hosta and not thriving.  Now they obviously love where I’ve put them.

There are at least 10 buds and blooms in this rose bush.

I’ve been doing a lot of weeding and trimming, but that doesn’t lend itself well to photos or publishing.

Baby quilt is now where it belongs Monday, Jul 21 2008

Flavia just sent this picture of the quilt in Maria Eduarda’s room.

And here is the STAR herself!

Gift book and cat quilt planning Saturday, Jul 19 2008

This photo is on the back of the jacket cover on Green Thoughts by Eleanor Perenyi.  I think eventually I’d like to try putting a similar center plot in my backyard.  My birthday celebrating continues thanks to Boodely!  :)

No, I haven’t finished the WWE or the Log Cabin quilts, but I’m thinking ahead.  Just as I can’t bear the thought of not having more books to read…and at the ready…I can’t bear the thought of not having more quilts to work on.  I bought sashing fabric this morning:  red with brown dots, aqua with a fine pattern, and dark brown with a variety of colors and little stars.  More pictures are on flickr.

Both clematis plants have a blossom! Wednesday, Jul 16 2008

Good things come to those who wait?  Today my second little clematis has produced a deep purple flower (an HF Young clematis).  The earlier one (a Nelly Moser clematis) pales in comparison, while I am ecstatic about both!!

Seeing the efforts of these two little plants makes me smile.  It’s a good day when new flowers appear.

Very first clematis’ blossom Sunday, Jul 13 2008

The two little plants continue to grow.  They look so skimpy and fragile climbing up the wire fence I attached just for them.  I’ve been aware of a bud on each plant; this morning when I came down for breakfast I spotted this new bloom.  The shorter plant has a bud on it so I’m hoping it opens soon, too.

More from our local farmers’ market Friday, Jul 11 2008

The tart cherries will become a pie.  Green onions and cucumber were new at the farmers’ market today.

Buying local is my intent this summer.  By the time I walk downtown, browse the market and walk home, it takes about an hour.  This combines a good walk with good food.  I’ll use these black raspberries on my cereal.

You know, eating all of this local food is a hard job, but someone has to do it! :)

Veggies and Black-eyed Susans Tuesday, Jul 8 2008

Once again I walked to our local farmers’ market downtown.  Got these beautiful vegetables—corn, tomatoes, radishes.

The Black-eyed Susans I transplanted a few days ago are looking much stronger today.

Flowers, fruit, vegetables Saturday, Jul 5 2008

These are my first cuttings from the rhubarb plant Lorraine gave me earlier this spring.  I’m hoping I have enough for a pie.  It’s one of my favorites!

The first of the two buds opened fully today.

This morning I walked downtown instead of my usual route through my neighborhood.  I pulled a two-wheeled cart so I could bring things back from the farmers’ market.  The green beans and new potatoes caught my eye.

Plantings near deck Tuesday, Jul 1 2008

When I moved in, there were huge, overgrown cedar bushes at each end.  Last year I trimmed them mercilessly and they never recovered.  Todd, my contractor, pulled them out for me when he did the deck.

Today I planted three starts of Maiden Grass; they’re to get from four to six feet tall.  For now, I moved some wave petunias from the front.  The hostas grew over many of them, so I moved those to the back where they’ll get full sun.  It may take them a little while to recover from sun deprivation, but I think they will.  I also bought a yellow day lily and in the morning I will plant it where it’s sitting.

Todd came by to finish my deck…all the spindles are now in place.  I showed him what I’d begun and he thought it worked.  Me, too.  Next spring I’m thinking of adding some hosta near the deck edge; that part stays shaded until late afternoon, while the front part gets lots of sun.
