This ‘n’ that Tuesday, Oct 30 2007

Spent the day bringing order to the chaos that surrounded me while I was painting.  Recycled some newspaper and cardboard.

My next big job will be sanding my newly painted red front door.  I’ll sand first with an 80 grit, then 220, then 600.  After the sanding is finished, I’ll use a roller to paint my last, I hope, coat of Heritage Red.

Praised be God who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

Daily meditation

Tuesday, 30 October

God understands our words and our silences, too. So often silence is all there is to prayer.

A muscle day Monday, Oct 29 2007

This was a muscle day.  First I painted the second coat of muslin on the top border and the fireplace mantle.  That’s finished.

Then…I rearranged furniture…several times…with several heavy pieces.  I think it’s the way I like it.

Petra thought I was entertaining her, I’m sure.  She climbed on the sofa, crawled under the sofa, looked at me askance when I shoved things around and around.

I’ve ordered a new slipcover for my love seat sofa, taupe.  After it comes, I want to replace my area rugs with bright red in them.  I’ve been tied to the dark green so everything went with that.  Now I’m not, so I want to add red and white accents.

Some sad news: a friend of mine learned her father has lung cancer.

A quiet day Sunday, Oct 28 2007

Had lunch with good friends.

Received this picture from Paul.  Am glad for it.

Also received e-mails from far-away friends in Brooklyn, San Francisco, Cuba, Mackinaw, Knoxville.

All of the above made my day worthwhile!! :)

Today I added the first coat of “muslin” to the top border and fireplace mantle that I primed yesterday.  Doesn’t look bad.  I could almost stop with one coat except I’d know it needed the second to be done well.

The room looks much brighter and more neutral.  I think I’m going to like it as I won’t be tied to the dark green that was there before.

This is WORK!

Painting Friday, Oct 26 2007

Almost did some damage to myself today!  No wonder all my joints are sore…  I was getting off my stepladder and missed the last step, so the left leg (yes, the same knee that’s been bothering me!) got a jarring.  I thought, Oh, no, I can’t believe I did that!!!!!  But I was extra careful the rest of the time and had no more missteps.  Nothing seems injured.

My neck is stiff from looking up so long doing that green border.  Totally covered it with prime today.  Already I like the way the rooms looks, even though the prime coat itself looks yucky.

I did the “white dove” around my outside screen door.  The new wood is really soaking it in.  It could stand a second coat, but it may not get it this year!

Also did the first coat of “muslin” on the entry way threshold.  Looks pretty good.  Probably won’t do a second on that this year either.

Then I rested for awhile, walked, and decided I’d just start on the green strip.  I figured I’d get just a little done today.  Kept working until I got hungry, ate lunch about 1:30, took a 30-minute nap, got up and worked on it some more.  Took a tea break about 4:30 and read the paper and that was enough to get me to the end of it.  My living room’s a mess, because everything is sort of pushed away from the walls…and I left it there.  Just finished–7:30.

Listened to Mozart while I was painting, nice beautiful harmony.

One “big” thing Friday, Oct 26 2007

A friend challenged me to do one “big” thing a day.  Getting up or showering won’t count!  This idea will guide my blog.

Today I spent all morning scanning photos and preparing a poem-like reminiscence for a friend who will have a significant birthday soon.  I’ve known him since we were at university a long time ago.

His wife called last week to say she’s preparing a friendship book for his birthday and wants letters and pictures.  I have the yearbook from that year, so I scanned the pages with his and my very young pictures, then scanned a more recent school-teacher photo of me.  When I finished, I printed the photos on glossy paper and my “poem” on parchment.  I mailed it today as directed and now anticipate hearing his reaction.
